One of my favortie artists David Choe’s upcoming Nothing To Declare show takes place in LA starting this Friday. The show runs from April 23rd until May 23rd and is taking place at 320 North Beverly Drive. Be sure to check out what he has in store for this event. If you’re a fan of the arts, I definitely recommend this exhibit.
Here’s a short documentary about Choe called Whales and Orgies. It’s described as the precursor to the documentary Dirty Hands: The Art and Crimes of David Choe…crazy genius.

It has been apparent to many of us who have been following the Guru story that the words and statements coming from Guru’s production partner Solar have seemed a bit odd and unrealistic. Solar who was at Guru’s beside throughout this whole ordeal was denying visitation to family members and close peoples of Guru, including the Gang Starr camp. Once news hit of Guru’s passing, the statement that Solar released saying it was Guru’s last words apparently could not have been from his mouth as it has come to light that he was in a coma since February and never regained conciousness. This statement that was recently released by a family member I think clarifies and supports everyones convictions that Solar had his own agenda and was basically full of shit!!
Keith Elam’s sister Patricia Elam sent this to DJ Premier and asked that it be distributed to all media outlets…..
The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith aka GURU for the outpouring of love, concern and support.
Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. GURU was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence.
GURU suffered from multiple myeloma for over a year. Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. As a result, GURU was in a coma from mid February until his death and never regained consciousness. Early on the morning of April 19th, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us.
GURU died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions.
The family is not aware of any foundations established by GURU. We know and understand that countless fans want to express their condolences and love and, to that end, we are planning a memorial event in the near future that will be all-inclusive. Please look for further details from the family as they become available.

What a sad day in hip hop it was today to hear the news of Guru passing away after losing his battle with cancer. Keith Elam, known to us all as Guru had been battling cancer for about a year and was admitted to the hospital after suffering from cardiac arrest just 6 weeks ago. Although there was word of a strong recovery, the beloved MC passed away yesterday in a New York City hospital at the age of 43.
If you don’t know who Guru was or what he and Gang Starr meant and contributed to hip hop, then you really don’t know jack shit about this culture. Gang Starr, the dynamic duo of DJ Premier and Guru created countless classic projects and songs together as a group as well as individually. Guru with his unique monotone voice and ill flow was so versatile with his rhymes. He could be conscious and empowering with songs like “Who’s Gonna Take the Weight”, “Positivity”, “Tonz ‘O’ Gunz”, or “Moment of Truth” and then hit you with his battle like aggressive styles over “B.Y.S.”, “Now You’re Mine”, “Militia” and countless others. Guru also demonstrated his talents with his solo efforts. Most notably was the release of his 4 Jazzmatazz projects which started back in 1993 and uniquely fused jazz artist collaborations with his own rhymes.
The first time I ever heard Gang Starr was when I was 11 years old. I was watching an episode of “Pump It Up” (ya’ll remember that show?) and Dee Barnes introduced the “Step into the Arena” video. That joint got me so hyped, and the video with the hood gladiators theme was dope. I became a fan ever since. They were one of the standout groups during the golden era of hip hop, an era that I am so blessed to have experienced. Guru and Premier will always be the standard in hip hop to me. Over 20 years in the game and never did they crossover or sell out, they always represented with integrity and a spirit that captured and exhibited the essence of hip hop. Guru, Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal, is such a fitting acronym for an MC that has inspired so many and will continue to do so with his catalog of great music. A reminder of what timeless hip hop really is, not this fake industry driven, cookie cutter, hot single for the month bullshit. And even though we probably won’t hear any Guru tributes on the radio (although I’m sure most mixshow djs would want to), or any MTV specials, or a VH1 doc, his memory will live forever in the souls of real hip hoppers across the globe, the trueskool heads who understand what this hip hop shit is really all about. Thank you Guru, for all your contributions and leaving future generations with much inspiration for the soul.

“Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is…”

New deliveries this week from Mighty Healthy & Nooka.

Xoco from Ray Fresco came thru and came out a winner with this TSOP Hoodie & Kroy Wen fitted. Stay up to date with this band on their website. Ray Fresco is fresh off their SXSW debut and is making a lot of noise for the 805. Support our own.

New collabo pieces from Nooka including UNDRCRWN, Kid Robot & MTV.
While a lot of you were in Indio for Coachella, we had our own schedule of events going on in-town. For one, Thom Yorke‘s band Atoms for Peace had a show at The Santa Barbara Bowl and better yet all weekend in our downtown Ventura we had The Spring Artwalk. With little to no preparation, the shop ended up having a great representation for the event. Since the shop has it’s Latino flavor, what better way to have art represented than with 2 Chicano style artists. Andrea Vargas & Rolando Camarena came thru in the clutch with so many great pieces and live painting with music alongside DJ Ben (Firecracker-LA) & DJ Wizkid. *Note: With so many artistic heads roaming around, it was nice to see positive reactions to our store concept rather than the usual “What…clothes? You mean guys don’t sell food here.”

Wizkid!

Shouts to Margaux (left) for putting together our very first Artwalk & her pops (right) for rockin’ the cow tee all weekend…available now at the shop. Get it while you can.
Rolando with his five legged horse painting.
Andrea Vargas with her piece inspired by Das Williams.
Artwalk brought out everyone who has a love for the arts even graffiti…whoa.
Today marks the release of Murs & 9th Wonder’s third collab project entitled “Fornever”. Although I can’t say I dig it more than “3:16 The 9th Edition”, this 10 track album got some dope joints with features from west coast talent Kurupt and Suga Free. The duo is already set to kick off their tour later this month with a stop at Velvet Jones in Santa Barbara on April 25th. Here’s one I’m diggin’ featuring Mr. Pimp Pimpin’, Suga Free.
